Basic Brief: Provide full landscaping and planting design for a plot without a flow
In summer 2024, Mr and Mrs. M got in touch to help them with their large rural homestead near Crewkerne.
The plot was previously an old and dilapidated bungalow and with an overgrown an and confused garden. At the time of contact the clients had finished a complete and extensive demolition and rebuild of a much larger property. Extensive grubbing out of a lot of the garden had already been completed to allow the build to take place, but now they had the beautiful house, and wanted to build a garden around it.

The outside the garden boasted a good number of lovely trees and a large collection of old apple trees which was grazed by the clients sheep, chickens and pigs in various area. The clients were keen to keep as many trees as possible but felt that garden lacked any sort of flow and colour. They wanted a space they could enjoy and look after themselves, but not so much worker that they would become a slave to it.

It was clear to me that the area needed opening up and a long scrappy run of Lonicre hedge was to be grubbed out to massivly open their views to the trees, orchard and landscape beyond. A handful of old apple and fruit trees sat directly near the house were sacrificed to continue to open up the space, with the majority retained and put on a pruning schedule.
The old lonicera hedge was replaced with black estate fencing to give as hard yet clear boundary between garden and paddock, and critically keeping the sheep out.
Once opened a single low herbaceous border was to be installed to soften the large expanse of patio, and two manageable island neds were set in the lawn, framing the newly created view beyond. Planting was focused on light, airy perennials and ornamental grasses, with repeat planting of shrub roses and Hydrangea for some larger structure.

The house needed climbers to soften the new stone, so a Wisteria over metal arch was planned for the back of the house, with new climbing roses at the front.

For this project, all garden border creation, as well as the removal of hedging and installation of estate fencing was completed by the clients themselves whom were very keen to be practically involved, as well as other contractors.

My involvement returned to supply and plant up all the newly created spaces, as well as offering advice and guidance throughout.
