Basic Brief: Provide full landscaping and planting design for a brand new barn conversion
In early 2022, Mr and Mrs. M reached out to Simon Land Gardens with an exciting garden creation project at their home near Merriott, Somerset. At that time, the couple had been busy transforming an old farm storage barn into a modern residence, resulting in a construction site with no defined outdoor space. However, the potential of the area was evident, boasting stunning, expansive views. My task was to develop a plan that would optimize the space surrounding the house, incorporating engaging while maximizing the beautiful scenery.

Once the hard landscaping was skillfully completed by the owners builder, planting could then take place

The south-facing area was ideal for a 'prairie' style border filled with grasses and hardy perennials, beautifully framing the scenic view. Beyond this, a sloping grassy patch with challenging stony soil was sown with wildflower seeds, aiming for a meadow-like ambiance, featuring both regularly cut sections and areas left to grow wild.
Resilient, low-maintenance shrubs were planted to provide privacy from the neighboring property situated lower on the hill.
The side of the house, adjacent to a woodland and mostly in partial shade, was transformed into a cozy retreat by planting a hedge at one end to create a sense of enclosure. A spacious gravel base maintained a bright atmosphere, showcasing a delightful mix of climbers, shrubs, ferns, and grasses. A low hedge of Hydrangea 'Vanille Fraise' lined pathway.
The north-facing rear of the property was designed to add interest without overshadowing the adjacent orchard. A rectangular border, framed by a low box hedge, featured a small raised seating area, providing a serene spot to relax away from the sun.
